When our bus arrived to the university all the host families
were there waiting for us adoption ceremony style. It was actually more of a
draft. Each family (the team) walked up and called out their students (the
draftees). Customary cheek kisses complete, we were escorted to the car and
many roundabouts later, we arrived at Paseo de Canalejas to our new home.
City living at its finest – we’re in the heart of Salamanca
just a short walk from Universidad de Salamanca, la Plaza Mayor, and el Río
Tormes. You can bet your bottom euro that you haven’t seen anything like our
bedroom on HGTV. Daisy stickers adorn the walls and a stuffed jaguar (Rafa)
guards us as we rest from atop the armoire. Two twin beds and an end table
later, we’re good to go.
Standing five feet tall and full of spunk, Flori rules
apartment 2A with two simple rules:
1. Always speak Spanish. No English
allowed. (We already got yelled at).
2. Eat all the food on the table. This one
is tough to follow when you are served two hamburgers at lunch…
After hearing other students talk about their first days
with their families, we’re pretty lucky to call her ours. Plus, she compliments
our Spanish – words of affirmation must be her love language.
Off to callouts for our placement test results.
