We spent Saturday being tourists in Salamanca and it made us
fall in love with our city even more. Our goal was to find the beautiful
library of Salamanca that we had seen on Google Images pre-departure. We didn’t
find it but rest assured that you’ll hear about it when we do. However, our
wandering did lead us to Universidad Pontificia and 155 steps later (Hailey
counted), the best view of Salamanca.

Not what we had planned, but exactly what we needed in our
“exploring Salamanca” day. Seeing something we wanted to do and doing it. Shout
out to spontaneity and two bag Chris.
Mid-day we decided to treat ourselves to the traditional
Spanish dessert of churros con chocolate – minus the chocolate for Hailey,
which meant more for SK. We took our time and embraced the Spanish mindset that
it’s better to sit and enjoy than get it to go.
One classic McDonald’s rendezvous later (on that free wifi
grind) we met up with our compañeros and headed off to the famed cathedral and
its lesser-known entrance. SK’s trusty grammar professor and one of Hailey’s
Chinese classmates filled us in on one of Salamanca’s best-kept secrets:
climbing the Cathedral tower. Lots of steps, narrow hallways, and spiral
staircases later, we made it to the top. The views were fabulous and can hardly
be captured in a photo. We did our best.
The afternoon ended with a trip down to the Río Tormes and
the Roman bridge that crosses it. One final look at the city we’ve called home
for two weeks.
Thanks to our pals for joining us on the adventure.
