Toledo and Tonight

Holy Toledo. We thought we loved Salamanca but we weren’t even ready for the beauty that we found in Castilla-La Mancha.

Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha, España
Centuries ago Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all crossed paths in Toledo and the city shows this union its cobblestone streets, unique architecture, and ornate tiles. Surrounded by a river and sitting atop a hill, Toledo made for a perfect Spanish capital before Madrid. The historic sights and sounds quickly captured our hearts. The best we can do is share some photos with you and encourage you to make a visit yourself; words simply won’t do it justice.

Shaded street in Toledo
The bus ride home was far too long and had us wishing we were still wandering the older-than-America streets of Toledo; the last thing we wanted to do was eat dinner with Flori speaking only Spanish. However, we knew we had no chance when we got home and remembered tonight was the night of Alberto’s return.

[Alberto. Flori’s resident House Dad/Boyfriend who works as a traveling ham salesman. No kidding. He proposed last week after her divorce was finalized but that was a little too soon for Flori’s liking. Again, no kidding.]

With couches pushed back, and chairs brought in from the kitchen; Jorge, Flori, Alberto, and we sat down for a dinner we assumed would be like any other but were we ever so wrong.

Alberto brought his hams, Jorge brought a bottle of Portuguese wine, and Flori brought her A-game with a delicious four-course meal. Hours of conversation and laughter ensued and relationships were developed over a language we are still learning. How cool is that? Everything from the Frog on the Edificio Historico to Jorge’s many “amigas” was discussed and we left the table ever so tired but so glad that we get to call Paseo de Canelejas our home for a month.

It may not always be normal but we’re glad the Cinco de Canelejas is finally back together.

Hasta luego from La Catedral de Toledo
